Abstract


Body Mass Index and Physical Activity Levels of Female University Students In Health Sciences Faculty

This study aimed to examine Body Mass Index (BMI) and Physical Activity Levels (PAL) of female university students in Health Sciences Faculty. It also has investigated the relationship between BMI and PAL. This study was carried out on 235 female university students in Firat University, Health Science Faculty, during 3-13 November, 2014. International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) short form was used to assess the PAL. Weekly vigorous and moderate physical activity and walking times and daily sitting times were determined with using IPAQ. Total physical activity times of students were calculated and then classified as ‘low, moderate and high’. Students were questioned, body weight and height, and BMI was calculated. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The mean age of the students was 20.01±2.09 years. 36.6% of the students staying in dorms. Average body weight was 57.59±8.47 kg, average body height was 163.29±5.33 cm and average BMI was 21.55±2.85 kg/m2. 11.5% of the students were overweight/obesity. Activity-related weekly energy consumption mean score was 1847 ± 1273 MET (basal metabolic rate) - min. among the whole group. According to total activity scores, 7.2% of the students had low, 80.4% of them had moderate and 12.3% of them had high level activity scores. There was no statistically significant difference between the PAL of students with VKI values below and above 25 kg / m2 (p> 0.05). According to the results of this study, activity levels of female university students studying in Health Sciences were not sufficient and only 12.3% were found to be in an adequate level of activity, which was useful for health.
