Abstract

Death Anxiety in the Old Age

As is the case in the world, the proportion of elderly (65 and over) population is also increasing rapidly in Turkey. According to the data of the year 2016, the ratio of the elderly population to the total population is 8.3%, it is estimated that this ratio will increase to 10.2% in 2023. According to the definition of the United Nations, the ratio of the elderly population in a country to the total population is between 8-10%, which means that the population of the country is "old" and that over 10% is "very old". Accordingly, it is assumed that Turkey soon entered the "very old" category of society (TUIK, 2016). This increase in the number of elderly population will bring many problems to the agenda or make it necessary to take precautions. Therefore, the analysis and evaluation of all aspects of the old-age phenomenon emerges as an important issue. For this reason, a comprehensive discussion of the causes of death anxiety in aging, the impact on the life of the elderly, and the situations that need to be taken as a preventive measure will be made. In general, changes in the elderly population, especially the elderly population, anxiety and anxiety due to anxiety of death, and the evaluation of the effects of these changes on the psychosocial lives of elderly people in Turkey in general constitute the reason for studying. Within the framework of the findings and information obtained in the compilation studies, the individual has reached the conclusion that the individual accepts the old age, prepares for the old age and ultimately strengthens the individual against the negative thoughts of an active old age. From this point of view, it will be examined whether it is possible to provide "facing death and looking at the sun", as the individual says of Irvin Yalom.
