Abstract


Attitudes of 112 Emergency Health Service Workers on Suicide Cases: A Validity and Reliability Study

Suicide remains a significant social and public health problem because the number of suicides is increasing recently. Factors contributing to suicide can vary such as mental and physical illness, alcohol or drug abuse, chronic illness, acute emotional distress, violence. Although suicidal behaviours are in low rates in Turkey and several European countries, the issue are among the most important subject for different reasons. The first place to treat suicidal individuals is the emergency health services unit. Emergency health care workers who frequently encounter these cases may play an important role in treating these individuals and also preventing suicides. Therefore, in the case of suicide emergency health care workers' attitudes towards suicidal people are critical. This study was carried out in order to perform the validity and reliability an attitude scale which evaluate the attitudes of emergency workers who faces frequently with suicide cases. 141 emergency health workers participated to the study. This study is also evaluated the scales' validity and reliability which used in the study developed by Er, Şimşek ve Aker (2013). The scale is developed to assess attitudes of emergency health workers against suicide. Confirmatory factor analysis and internal consistency analysis were performed for validity and reliability of the scale. According to the results, the original 6-factor structure of the scale turned into 5-factor structure. Therefore, review of propositions regarding prevention, medical, and trigger dimensions recommended.
