Abstract


Evaluation of General Nutrition Knowledge Levels of Patients with Cardiovascular Disease

In order to reduce the risk factors of cardiovascular diseases, individuals need to acquire healthy eating behaviors. This research was conducted as a cross-sectional study to investigate the levels of healty eating behaviours of coronary artery disease patients. The population of the study consisted coronary artery disease patients admitted to the cardiology out patient clinics of academic medical center between 1 January - 31 March 2017. The mean age of the patients’ was 58,38 ± 14,72 years (minimum 18 – maximum 80) The study sample included 350 voluntary patients selected by random sample method. Data were collected by using a form including socio-demographic characteristics and General Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire. Arithmetic mean, standard deviation, minimum, maximum and percentage parameters are used in the distribution of the data. Descriptive statistics and Pearson chi-square tests are used in the assesment of the data. According to the findings obtained from the study, the average score of General Knowledge Questionnaire was 70,36±9,86. The diet–disease relationships subscale score and mean total score of the participants increased as the educational status increased. Sources of nutrients information subscale score increased with age and education (p<0.05, p <0.001, respectively). The relationship between diet–disease relationships subscale score and mean total score increased as the education level increased (p<0.001). According to the Body Mass Index, the Sources of nutrients subscale score of the underweight patients were higher than the normal weight, overweight and obese patients (p<0.05). Although there was a positive correlation between education level and mean total score, there was no significant relationship between education level and Body Mass Index. Mean total score and the mean scores of subscales did not differ according to gender. It was determined that the majority of the participants were aware of the importance of increasing the consumption of vegetables and fruits and restriction of salt, sugar and cholesterol. It was determined that more than half of the participants had knowledge about the fat, salt, cholesterol, trans fatty acid content of foods.
